Pensioner Sue Elcock went on a fishing trip to keep son Simon company — and hooked a 130lbs monster fish longer than herself.
Sue, 68, was visiting Simon and wife Michelle at their home in Perth, Western Australiaand didn’t expect to catch more than a tiddler when she joined him on a charter boat.
But she felt a tug on her line during the 5am excursion during the trip off the coast of Lancelin and thought she had caught a “fair-sized fish.”
Forty minutes later, Sue, Simon and others angler on the boat hauled in a giant bass grouper which measured 5ft 4in long — two inches longer than petite Sue.
Sue from Lilleshall, Shrops, said: «Simon is an experienced sea angler and I have been out with him before when I have been visiting he and Michelle.
“The biggest fish I’ve caught before was a snapper about a foot long and and when this one took the bait on the bottom the tug on the line didn’t seem much.
“I was using one of Simon’s electric reels but it still took nearly an hour to get him on board.
“And I just couldn’t believe the size of it when it reared it’s head out the the water.It was the size of a settee.”
Sue, who is staying with aluminium mine worker Simon ,49, until the end of the month added: «Someone said you would need an awful lot of chips to go with a fish like that.

When Sue Elcock set off on a Reel Force Deep Drop Fishing Charter in Lancelin this morning, she did not expect to return with a record-breaking 62 kilogram bass groper.
The Shropshire woman had only ever caught a small snapper on a previous fishing trip to Perth. “Reeling in this 1.5m monster was quite a surprise.” she confided. «The fish is just little bit taller than I am.”
She and her son Simon were fishing in 350 metres of water some 50 kilometres off the coast.
The fish took some 30 minutes to get alongside the boat. “Afterwards I felt absolutely amazed. I couldn’t believe it, I’ve never seen a fish that big let alone caught one.” she explained. «It took two really big men to get it in the boat.”
The huge fish, which beat the charter boat record by 8 kilos, was filleted on the Lancelin jetty in front of a small crowd of people. “We’re having some tonight, we gave some to those on the jetty and the rest is being frozen.” she said.
Sue is one lucky angler.
